Zonta International
Zonta International currently has 3 international projects
in Niger, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Afghanistan.
In
Southern Niger, women now account for almost half of all
cases of HIV/AIDS. Niger, West Africa, is the second
poorest country in the world. To counter the devastating
effects of HIV/AIDS, the CARE project will focus on
reducing the risk of HIV/AIDS and its physical, social and
economic consequences for at least 3,600 women and their
families by the year 2006. The project will provide
HIV/AIDS education, self-esteem and negotiation skills
training, and support networks of female peers.
Trafficking in women and girls for sexual exploitation is
a lucrative global industry in Bosnia/Herzegovina,
involving millions of dollars and thousands of damaged
lives. Trafficked women and girls report repeated rapes,
unplanned pregnancies, beatings, torture and other sexual
abuses. In Bosnia alone, more than 10,000 females are
victims of trafficking. Zonta's Anti-Trafficking
Community Mobilization project builds women's organization
for community mobilization, increases media's and the
public's awareness through communications and public
relations and builds collaboration and coalition in
support of enforceable public policies to stop
trafficking, support prevention activity and provide
appropriate response to victims.
Before 1996 Afghan women formed 50% of government workers,
70% of all teachers and 40% of medical personnel. Today,
these women know what it means to be displaced, to have
one of the highest rates of maternal and child mortality,
one of the lowest rates of access to education and
healthcare, and total exclusion from public life and
decision making. In response to Zontian's dedication to
improving women's lives in
Afghanistan, the 2004-2006 International Service projects
will continue to focus on the long-term improvement for
the Afghan women's quality of
life, specifically in rural areas.
